A program to foster the next generation of innovative minds, founded at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs
The Bachelor of Innovation (BI) program was founded by Dr. Terrance Boult at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) in 2007. The program consists of two major components: the Innovation Core, and a major area of study. The Innovation Core is the foundation of the program, and is designed to teach and guide students to an innovative and future-forward mindset. Students study and practice concepts of innovation that are proven to be teachable, as well as their desired area of study. By pairing education of innovation with a major area of study, the program encourages the practice and application of innovation in the fields students are most interested in.
The Innovation Teams Courses
As a student in the BI program, there are three courses taken focused on teamwork, collaboration, and innovation. In these courses, students work on teams with seniors acting as leaders for each team over the course of a semester. The teams work with real-world clientele to transform ideas into impact. The work done in these courses are not simply projects; the student teams act as contractors for their clients, and their work directly impacts those clients. The work of these teams is very frequently utilized by these clients in the real world, whether it is for their marketing, product development, or more. The teams courses allow students to not only learn concepts of innovation and teamwork, but to practice them and get feedback as well. After all, what better way is there to prepare students to be innovators, collaborators, and leaders than to practice in real-world situations?
